Waiver / liability release

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art designed to teach self discipline, respect, self defence and confidence.  BJJ is also a competitive sport, but implicitly sport jiu jitsu teaches the skills and mental discipline at the foundation of BJJ.  The following are rules which we expect all students to follow to provide a respectful and safe learning  environment for everyone.  Those not following the rules can and will be asked to leave the mats.

Hygiene:

BJJ has us in close contact so hygiene is very important.  We wash the mats every day with bleach as an essential part of safe training.  It is important for the students to adhere to these rules:

1.     Don’t walk on the mats in your shoes or flip flops.

2.     Wear shoes or flip-flops off the mats, in changing areas and when going to the bathroom and wash/sanitise your hands.

3.     If you have any cuts tape them

4.     Cut your nails short

5.     Please come to class clean – especially feet and hands.

6.     Wash your gi after use

7.     If you are sick do not train

General Etiquette:

These are generally expected at any BJJ school you go to.

1.      When a class is in session please wait quietly so as not to distract or impact the class Think “library” rules.

2.     Bow on and off the mats

3.     If late for class wait quietly by the side of the mat to be invited on by the instructor or a black-belt (Professor).  Then bow on.

4.     Ask the instructor if you need to leave the class.

5.     If a prior class is wrapping up, wait until the instructor invites you onto the mats for your class.

6.     Wait for designated water breaks to have water.  It is inconsiderate to have the class and/or training partners wait for you.

7.     When lining up at the beginning and end of class have your gis tidy and belts tied.  Do not jostle or shove and no talking.

8.     Coaches and assistants are there to help.  Talking back to the coaches is disrespectful and will result in being asked to leave the mats.

Warmups

Do not jostle or shove during warmups.  Focus on the tasks and pay attention to technique.  The warmups are designed to help your BJJ.  This is not a time to socialise.

Skills

1.     Do NOT talk while the instructor is demonstrating the skills.  This is disrespectful to the instructor and to your teammates who are there to learn.

2.     If you have a question about the skill – raise your hand at the end of the demonstration and wait to be called upon.

3.     When practicing the skills allow your partner to execute the skill.  Help guide each other do the skill correctly.

4.     If you need help raise your hand and wait for the instructor to come by.

5.     Do the skill shown.  Repeat the skill taking turns even if you think you know it.  Repetition helps retention. Continue until the instructor says time is up.

6.     If you are seen not doing the skill shown or fighting your partner so they cannot practice the skill you will be asked to leave the mat and your partner assigned a new partner.

 Sparring

  1.     Be ready to spar with mouthguard handy, and belts tied.  Tie your belt in between rounds (not during).
  2.    Know who your training partner is.  If they are lower rank, size or age spar accordingly.

3.     No talking during sparring.

4.     If executing a submission go slowly and wait for the tap.

5.     Screams, “ow”, singing and talking count as a tap.

6.     No bragging.

7.     Know your space.  If you run into another pair, move for the higher rank.

Superfights and Sparring

1.     Be ready with gis fixed, mouthguard ready and belt tied.  If you are not ready you will miss your turn and someone else will be chosen in your place.  It is not respectful to make the class wait.

2.     No talking during the super-fights and watch your team-mates out of respect and support.
